Some of these lovely objects I found in England, a treasure trove for still life objects. The cup is fine bone china, in an unusual shape with a very classic pattern, the pretty plate with the gold edge I found in a charity shop, I just love rummaging in said shops, bric-a-brac shops, flee markets and the like, I don't think I will ever run out of things to paint.

Realism Guild Show

Tonight is opening night for the International Guild of Realism's 6th Annual Juried Show. The Sage Creek Gallery in Santa Fe is hosting the event, which features 70 artist members. I'm excited that my painting Morandi Redux was selected for this year's show. This is the third IGOR show I've been juried into; last year, my painting Setting Sun was awarded Best Still Life (and to make my joy complete, it sold!). The tomatoes have been incredible this year.  The cherry tomatoes in our garden have been so sweet!

For this still life, I also did a quick value study.  After I'd set it aside I realized that the value of the cut tomato was too light.  Because it's a study I didn't feel the need to go back and repaint it, but it certainly helped me realize the true value(s) of the inside of the tomato in the final painting.

       Thank you Ann, for this exciting challenge.  I have admired many of your peek-a-boo paintings and now a great challenge.  I started with a background tone of an acrylic paint called Hotshots Fluorescent Acrylics in Fiery Red.  The came the olive green in random brush strokes, then the dark maple leaf forms with much of the red showing through.  next came my favorite, turquoise leaves, some more touches of green in a lighter value, and some brushes strokes of alizarin crimson,cobalt and dioxine purple in the dark leaves.  I really had fun doing something totally different today.                       MY Blog

Da Juice

I started this with a nectarine instead of the orange. After wiping it twice, and getting very discouraged, I decided to switch to the orange. And it quickly came together. I realized that the nectarine had been too busy and contrasty and was distracting from the glass. The orange worked much better.

Yesterday was the Fall Art Fair at Summerland Gardens.  It was a beautiful day, partly cloudy, but luckily no rain.  Summerland Gardens has been roasting and selling chiles from Hatch, New Mexico for the last few weeks.  Regularly, a truck drives up from Hatch to deliver the chiles and everyday they sell as many as they roast.

There were bushels of chiles, mild, medium and hot, just waiting to be roasted.  I set-up and painted this one in the afternoon.

I couldn't resist!  Smelling the roasting all day, I bought half a bushel...the exact ones roasting in this photo!  I confess, I bought milds!  Which ones would you have bought?

I was amazed to discover the wide variety of martinis people make these days. Not being much of a drinker, I had no idea.
I found the softness and subtle tonal shifts very different from my usual subject matter. It made for an interesting challenge.

"Summer Contained" by Carolina Daley

I am so excited to be part of Still Life Artists International! This is my first blog post ever, so I chose one of my favorite paintings, Summer Contained. I set up a composition with glass bottles and seashells, but it wasn't coming together until a shaft of sunlight came in from the window and suddenly it had this fascinating interplay of angles of light and shadow. I kept the colors as monochromatic as possible to leave the focus on the play of light.

Dry Idea

I had so much fun ... well after I got over the agonizing part ... painting the last one I decided to start a new series. I don't know how many there will be, but I'm calling it Things in Glass. Which makes for many possibilities. One of the fun things to do with things in glass is to add a liquid, in this case a martini. The refraction of the liquid lets you see what's in it from the top and the side at the same time!

Gloria J Zucaro's Four Value Challenge "Island In The Clouds"

This is the Sept 10, 2011 weekly challenge from the Daily Paintworks site.  The project involves using 4 values to design your painting.  How to "Keep it simple".  Not as easy as it would seem!  Nonetheless, I enjoyed the challenge and realize how valuable it is to learn to decipher the different values in your 2D composition to make it as realistic as the original scene.  I used Burnt Sienna and white and plan to finish the painting in colors natural to the actual landscape.  This photo was taken in Busse Woods, near Schaumburg, Ill on the North side of Route 72.

  This faucet with it's beautiful rust and corrosion was from a photograph that I chose from Frankie's Johnson's selections at the workshop at The Clearing.  We picked either the faucet or an old barn door to paint for studying texture, and then added our own items to complete the scene.  The little bird that I placed under the faucet is a gift from my sister-in-law whose beautiful package I painted in "The Present" challenge on the Daily Paintworks site.

I often say that I don't choose the subjects I paint, they choose me. While browsing through a local flea market, the little chicken sugar and creamer set caught my eye and for some goofy reason unknown to me, I was transfixed. They begged to be bought and at 99 cents I couldn't refuse. I love pairing unusual objects with each other. Add a little whimsy and I'm right at home with the composition.

Two Oranges, Original Still Life Painting by Paula Peacock

While painting, I learned rather quickly that the peeled orange rinds in my still life set up start to droop and lose their shape almost right away. Especially under the hot light I had focused on it. I either had to paint very fast (which I can't) or peel more oranges. Though the title is Two Oranges, the reality is it took about 5 oranges by the time I finished.
This original oil painting on canvas titled,'Two Oranges', measures 9" x 12" and is enhanced beautifully by a wide, dark cherry wood frame.
