Christmas Commission by Pamela Blaies

Grandma's China Creamer
oil on linen
6" x 6"
SOLD

I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. December has snuck up on me and it seems Christmas is right around the corner. I just finished another Christmas commission. This little china creamer was a challenge because of it's frilly little edges. I wanted to create just enough detail, but keep a loose feeling with my brushwork. It was a great exercise on edges!

Christmas Commission by Pamela Blaies

Commissioned Apple and Cherries
oil on linen

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.... The cold snap has really gotten things feeling like winter around here. Some of the neighborhoods around me have even started to put up Christmas decorations. I always like to wait until after Thanksgiving to decorate and begin listening to holiday music, but I have started on a couple of Christmas commissions. Here is one I just finished this past week.

Stay warm!

Fond Farewell to Summer by Pamela Blaies

Red Pears

12" x 9"

Today is officially the end of summer for the Blaies household. I will miss having the kids around and enjoying the carefree days. But it will be nice to have more time to myself in the studio. Here is my newest painting "Red Pears."

Process in Reverse by Pamela Blaies

In Season

I usually do small studies before painting a larger piece, but this time my process got all turned around. As I set out my composition, intending to focus only on a couple of pieces of fruit, the still life just seemed to put itself together inviting me to create the larger painting, In Season. I liked the colors and light so much, I left the composition right were it was overnight and painted two Petites (6" x 6") the next day. Fun!

Red Apple Slices by Pamela Blaies

6" x 6"
oil on linen panel

Here is Petite Painting #7. To make the green grapes look illuminated, I painted the lightest part of the grape first to make sure the color I mixed stayed saturated. The cast shadows of the grapes really makes this light effect pop. Anyone up for a snack?

A Little Birdie Told Me by Pamela Blaies

6" x 6"
oil on linen

Here is painting #4 of the 100 daily paintings I will be completing for the Petite Painting Project. I found this ceramic bird at an antique mall and was drawn to its sweet face. I love the combination of green and purple, so since I still have some redbud blooms, I snipped a few more sprigs to add to this composition. Happy Spring!

Winter Holly - Daily Study # 2 by Pamela Blaies

8" x 10"
oil

I did this study yesterday using some holly with berries I found in my yard. I focused on being selective in my edges, making abstract shapes on my canvas, instead of painting "leaves." I enjoyed painting free strokes with a brush and adding some texture and sharp edges with the knife. The effect of the teacup in this composition makes the holly seem to dance around in a circle.
