Painting light and air around these objects gave this whole composition a warm glow. I had an intentional purpose in exaggerating the light and reflections around the orange. I wanted to make sure the edges of the metal pitcher right up against the dark of the background drew the eye into the focal point, but didn't steal the focus. I love the drama it created of intense light. After I finished up the painting, I had to get out to run some errands and it was cold! Below freezing. I wanted to be back in my cozy studio in front of the "warm glow."  Hope you are all keeping warm!

Mandarins and Firethorn Blooms

Firethorn Pyracantha is a type of climbing vine that has huge thorns that sting for a while if you get pricked by one. I have a 25 foot row of them along our fence line and I see them from my kitchen window. I enjoy the view when every spring they are covered in beautiful white blooms and in the fall they are covered in little clusters of bright red berries. But boy do I hate pruning time - OUCH!

Wine and art make for a fun evening! Our group PAINT (Professional Artists in North Texas) had a great turnout at the Ft. Worth Community Arts Center reception last night.  It was nice to see many of my collectors in attendance. This piece is one of the paintings that found a new home last night.

Today I had some fun with paint! I did four small studies with lemons, working fast and loose. I experimented with some different colors today. This painting looks a little different than a lot of my recent work because I substituted Pthalo Blue for Ultramarine Blue and used cool-ish colors for the background. I love this blue! It gives the painting a fresh feeling, full of light. Below is a photo of the toned canvas at the block-in phase. Tomorrow I might try something like this again, but tone it orange instead of neutral.....

Happy New Year!

Here is my first painting of 2013. I did a study of a similar composition to this a few days ago and was planning to make this a second study. But I liked the setup so much that I decided to go ahead and get out my oil primed linen. This color combination and ultra-dramatic lighting is stunning to me. It was a fun challenge to keep it fresh and loose when painting so small. I think I'd like to paint something like this again as a larger painting.

A Little Studio Time by Pamela Blaies

Today I enjoyed some time in the studio after all of the fun family Christmas festivities of the past week. After putting a dark tone on the canvas, I took a cloth and wiped out the areas that I was going to add light. Then I blocked in the shadows, letting the toned canvas show through some of the brushstrokes. Last of all I added the light mostly with palette knife. This is a study for a larger painting I'm planning for tomorrow and I'm really happy with the loose feel of it.

More Winter Berries - Daily Study #4 by Pamela Blaies

Oranges and Indian Hawthorn

The days are crazy lately, but I am enjoying my little daily studies. I found these beautiful blue berries all over my indian hawthorn bushes, so I clipped some to bring inside to paint. Using transparent washes that leave some of the toned canvas showing through gives an interesting effect when used in conjunction with impasto texture in the oranges and berries.
