Fiesta Flowers by Char Fitzpatrick | Floral Still Life

14"x10"
Mixed media

I painted this pot of flowers several times on the same paper. I washed it in the shower three times and finally got something I could work with. It became quite lively and messy. I tried to create some kind of order with gouache and black ink but it still wants to be naughty!

Italian Soda by Char Fitzpatrick | Dessert Still Life

42"x32"
Oil

I love food and particularly Italian food. I worked in a family-owned Italian deli for years, appreciating the look of the food as well. I enjoyed the challenge of pouring an Italian soda in one of the beautiful reflective glasses and rapidly painting it. I painted it lovingly large.

Char Fitzpatrick's Party Cake on Paintbox from Portland

This cake got way out of hand. I think I must have been lusting for a piece in my mind.

Wild Flowers by Char Fitzpatrick | Floral Still Life

10x14
Watercolor and gouache

This painting is done in wet-in-wet style watercolor. I worked into the painting while the surface was still watery. I work fast in this style and the paint has a mind of its own. It is a very free form technique, lots of fun. I then drew white marks over the surface when it was nearly dry to create quite a different and random type of bouquet.

Zigzag Geranium by Char Fitzpatrick | Watercolor Painting | Floral Still Life

15x13
Watercolor and gouache

Gouache is an opaque substance with the consistency of toothpaste. It is water-based and acts like a very high grade poster paint. In this painting I struggled mightily to get the feel of the geraniums, one of my favorite flowers, and failed. Out of desperation I blocked out most of the under image until only the glowing pot and geranium head were visible. It has a magnetically mysterious effect I never planned on.

Jan's Bouquet by Char Fitzpatrick | Floral Still Life | Oil Painting

20" x 16”
Oil on canvas

My sister grows a marvelous garden every summer. She loves all kinds of flowers and has a gift for arranging them. I passed this bouquet in her entryway and was mesmerized by the color control and the textural variety of flowers. I often see a "trick of the eye" when I paint, in this case a spatial puzzlement where the shadow of the vase meets the gray of the wall, which should appear to be behind it. I like to tweak those things if I see them.

White Rhodie by Char Fitzpatrick | White Rhododendron Still Life Oil Painting

20" x 16"
Oil on canvas

I wanted to do something dramatic with these white rhododendrons. They were particularly lush. I enjoy the challenge of painting white objects, their shadows and reflected colors. I love the drawing control required in painting flowers.
