SIGNS OF SPRING, 8X6", OIL, SOLD

The iris has always been a favorite flower of mine, but the ones that will grow in Florida are not to spectacular.  The ones we have here are not the big, beautiful, bearded iris that the more northern states have.  Ours are little puny flowers.   I always look forward to visiting our mountain home in North Carolina, as one of the first things I did when we bought it, was plant all those lovely flowers from my childhood.  Daffodils, iris, tulips, lilac, cone flowers, and lots and lots of hydrangea.  I have not been able to go up so far this spring, but we are planning a trip soon.  I hope there are still some daffodils and lilac blooming.  But if they are gone, I know the iris will soon be there to greet me.  What is your favorite flower?

This was another experimental bouquet in which I was getting the feel of oil crayons, while maintaining a scratchy drawing feeling.

Wild Flowers by Char Fitzpatrick | Floral Still Life

10x14
Watercolor and gouache

Wild Flowers by Char Fitzpatrick
©2014 Char Fitzpatrick

This painting is done in wet-in-wet style watercolor. I worked into the painting while the surface was still watery. I work fast in this style and the paint has a mind of its own. It is a very free form technique, lots of fun. I then drew white marks over the surface when it was nearly dry to create quite a different and random type of bouquet.

Cubist Bouquet by Char Fitzpatrick | Watercolor Painting | Floral Still Life

14x11
Watercolor and gouache

Cubist Bouquet by Char Fitzpatrick

Sometimes in attempting to paint a subject, it just goes wrong no matter how hard I try. In this case, I over painted these flowers about 3 times until they became murky and lifeless. I used one of my favorite last-ditch techniques and put it under the shower head in the bath tub. Most of the image washed off leaving a lovely soft painting. I then enhanced it with opaque gouache, heavily describing the background and the table, but leaving the delicacy of the flowers. It seemed to want to be a cubist painting, with small lines and angles that offset the fuzzy flowers.

Dark Dahlias by Char Fitzpatrick | Watercolor Painting | Floral Still Life

24" x 18"
Watercolor

Dark Dahlias by Char Fitzpatrick

This is another in a series of interpretive floral paintings. The dahlias intense colors are offset by jagged lines and the spotty background suggests a wall behind the table. I like to work with transparent vases and how they distort stems.

Daily Painting, Oil, Original, Floral, "Sunny Pansy"

This is a re-post from last spring.  I liked the bright yellow flower against the blue background enough to show it to you again.

I must thank the City of Asheville, North Carolina, for filling their park with these cheerful and sunny pansies this spring.

How could I resist this glorious yellow flower?

The weather in Asheville last week, was gorgeous in the mid 70's, and everything was in bloom. Dogwood ruled as it is seen everywhere you look, but these adorable, bright pansies cannot be beat for vibrant color.

Gloria J Zucaro's "Purple Apple,Blue Orange,Green Lemon"

6"H x 6"W Original Oil on Canvas Panel
$65.00 Unframed $5.00 S&H

                My Blog                                         My Website
This weeks challenge from the Daily Paintworks site is called "Change the Color!"  My original and actual colors were red apple, yellow lemon and an orange orange.  The soup bowl is actually shades of teal,blue/ green, & purple.  This was hard but fun!  I did the value study over my first panel with the four 10 minute pumpkin paintings on it that I had done for that challenge in October.   The colors underneath were orange, yellow and blue/green.  It made it a little confusing when I started my value study and painting, but once I got in most of the basic colors it felt better.

Gloria J Zucaro's "Thirsty Bird"

16"H x 8"W Oil on Canvas panel.
$100.00 unframed

This faucet with it's beautiful rust and corrosion was from a photograph that I chose from Frankie's Johnson's selections at the workshop at The Clearing.  We picked either the faucet or an old barn door to paint for studying texture, and then added our own items to complete the scene.  The little bird that I placed under the faucet is a gift from my sister-in-law whose beautiful package I painted in "The Present" challenge on the Daily Paintworks site.
