'A Cool Pear' - 6"x6" Still Life Original Oil Painting of Pear on a Plate by New York Fine Artist Maryann Lucas
I recently had a little exchange with plein aire artist Roos Schuring regarding her thoughts on still life painting. At this point in her career, she is fully invested and enthralled with the concept of painting out of doors, but at one time painted from photographs and studio set ups. I am breaking away from full reliance on photographs and I am just beginning to adventure outside. I asked her what aspects of still life study she thought would benefit my growth as a painter. She suggested I set up a still life in natural north light. So I did. She was so right! I have fallen in love with cool light... it is so elegant and quiet. Now that is a cool pear!

My husband never travels for work, but he was out of town this past week. That meant only one thing to me.... I could paint at night!! I have always loved the feeling that the track lighting gives to my kitchen at night. So, one night, with the house to myself, I set up in the kitchen and painted a pear. As part of my commitment to expanding my painting style, I was going for big strokes, pretty color, speed and I wanted it all alla prima! Loose and painterly are what I am longing for nowadays... and I quite like this effort.

This is an entirely new style in still life for me... the cluttered-piled-seemingly-mismatched-items-all-in-one-small-space kind of still life. My daughter, Edwina, set it up for us to paint the other day. She just got back from a semester abroad in Florence, Italy where she studied painting among other things. It is pretty cool when your child teaches you a trick or two... not to mention the thrill it is to share a similar passion.

Worcestershire and Lemons
I had most of my family for Thanksgiving this year. Everybody brought something. As always, my father was in charge of the shrimp. He makes a spicy cocktail sauce to go along with it. One of his special ingredients is Worcestershire sauce. During the commotion of getting dinner on the table, I caught a glance of his bottle of sauce sitting alongside three beautiful lemons. The color combination was striking. It had to be painted.

The Daily Paintworks challenge this week is to use a reference picture to form your own group of people from all the subjects in the reference crowd scene. I changed the scene by eliminating the umbrellas, and putting people from three different tables together. I brought the windows and flower boxes down to the lower level of the building.
These ladies needed to get off their feet after a day of sight seeing! "Cheers!

This little still life grew out of a challenge to really load up the brush with paint, and place the strokes down boldly and decisively. Surely not a challenge for the timid or faint of heart! Rose Hips- a 6"x6" Original Oil Painting by New York Fine Artist Maryann Lucas
I started with a background of lime green and cut some rose hips from my garden to welcome in the new season here in Sag Harbor, New York. When I "googled" rose hips to check the spelling, I was surprised to find out that they are edible. In fact, rose hips, which are the seed pods of roses, make a delicious hot tea. Hmmmm. This peach is just a little too big for the sugar bowl I put it in. When I put the top on, it looked like a glass hat.
