Peach Bloomers is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, as I pack up my favorite vases, along with buckets of fresh flowers for my Valentine's workshop this weekend. I have so many prizes to give away I had to buy a roll of those ticket stub thingies. Amongst the goodies are four perfect men who shall be going home with four lucky students (won't their husbands be surprised!). These perfect men who are prizes are decadently rich and very attractive. I certainly hope there won't be any hair pulling or name calling when they make their appearance! Stay tuned, I'll be sharing photos of these perfect fellows with you soon, along with all the excitement of our three day event.

Blue Breeze Daisies is the daily newbie in Flower Mound Studio - try saying that three times fast, at midnight, after painting until midnight for six nights in a row! Not that I'm complaining, I love my job. And it seems the muses really do prance about at their colorful best at midnight, now why is that I wonder? I often wonder if my normal friends wonder what it is that motivates an artist to quit her "real job" to paint and dabble all day. Can you tell what song has been going through my mind all day? I had quite a bit of fun with Raindrops on Roses, after filling the canvas with a bit of riotous color, I then gelled up my paint super thick and applied a layer in palette knife and broad brush to finish off the highlights. There is just something about texture and color together that makes the heart happy....

Out of the Blue Delphiniums and Iris is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, and the last hurrah of the batch of fresh Japanese iris and blue delphiniums. The little petals were making plopping noises the whole time I was painting them under the studio light, as they fell to the tabletop. They posed bravely and stood steadfastly under duress, and deserve to be remembered for all they gave in the name of color! We salute you little flowers. Oh my, it must be getting late, where did that come from?

Life's a Breeze Peonies is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio. Since the day was chilly and slightly wet out, the pugs stayed in the studio with me all day, hunkered down as if they lived in the Alaskan tundra. I love these cozy days in the studio, with all my office helpers snoring and tossing toys around while I work. Garden Party Iris is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio. One of my friends asked me if I paint every day. The answer is yes, unless I'm on an airplane on my way to teach a workshop, I paint every day. I've been painting every day for about 7 years now. I have a condition called the Daily Painters Compulsion. I'm pretty sure I should be on some sort of strong medication for it.

Today I went to the store for lemons and found yet another new vase. Then I saw these iris, and then the delphiniums, and then bunches and bunches of fresh peonies. Then I saw a really cute green roller bag I could use on the plane to stuff my treasures in for my trips to and from workshops. I won't tell you what my grocery bill ended up being, for that bag of lemons, but let's just say this is how things rapidly spiral out of control, when I'm allowed to go shopping with no adult supervision whatsoever.

The new sparkly wonderful vase makes its debut!

Violet Spotlight Sunflowers is the daily newbie in Flower Mound Studio, a departure from my French village series and return to one of my favorite subjects of all time! The chilly weather outside just seemed to call for warm colors on the canvas today. My next video shoot is coming up in just a few weeks - I'm thinking about geraniums as the subject, but haven't quite decided yet! I'll have to consult my director and her staff, once she's finished with her post second breakfast naptime break....

When I saw the little boy hopping up and down at 7 am this morning in my hotel lobby and pointing, I thought maybe he really liked the koi pond here at the Gaylord Palms. Imagine my surprise when I saw what he was really excited about - the resident gators! Fortunately these leathery little guys didn't seem too interested in climbing through the iron bars to munch on the tourists and they even ignored their lazy turtle neighbors. Excuse me, Mister Bellman, there's an alligator in my room.... Note to self, if you hear scuffling on the carpet outside your door, do NOT open the door without your running shoes on.

We painted roses until the seagulls came home in sunny Florida today. Tomorrow we tackle sunflowers and, if they cooperate and open a bit more, some tulips, too!

We hit the flower jackpot in Florida yesterday, my hostess with the most-ess Ann drove me to a warehouse of fresh flowers as soon as I landed in the sunshine state yesterday. On top of that, she failed to restrain me in any way, shape, or fashion, as I tossed fresh peonies, hydrangeas, Japanese iris, daisies, delphiniums, and all sorts of other colorful plants onto ~~our~~ my shopping cart. Oh, and a few new vases, too, (because one can never have too many sparkley vases....). Today we painted hydrangeas until the seagulls came home, and tomorrow we're going to warm up our pink brushs with some lovely roses and peonies. I do so appreciate my flower models. They don't fidget, they don't complain about the bright lights, they don't eat much and never, ever show up for a shoot after partying all night with bags under their eyes. Read more....

I broke out the red brushes to help stave off the polar vortex today! The hubby has been in and out of the ER for a few days, and finally is doing better. I cannot think of anything I want more for the new year than a healthy hubby. First of all, I'm a terrible nurse, and I only know how to cook using the microwave! Rainy Day Poppies is a two-part approach to the flowers that will take center stage in my Tuscany, Italy, workshop in June - I'll be teaching there during the peak of poppy bloom season, and can hardly wait to see fields and fields of these reds - and after all those pink peonies these past few weeks, my brushes were begging for some warmer colors! I finished three small paintings yesterday - 14X14 size each, and today I brightened the clouds a bit on Rainy Day Poppies by adding Brilliant Yellow by Richeson (Shiva Series). I do love that stuff. If you want to brighten a red, yellow or orange, add brilliant yellow (or naples yellow light) instead of white. Remember, white dulls and grays - white is the color killer. There are much better options for brightening those expensive cadmiums. You can learn more about this approach to achieving your brightest, most exciting colors in my painting workshops.

California Blooming Radishes and Hydrangeas was my class demonstration in historic Balboa Park this weekend. I was tickled pink to find the roses were in bloom on Coronado Island, when we visited my favorite cottage garden there after class. This talented group of painters included the largest collection of international students I've ever had in a class. The traveled furthest award went to six students from Singapore, Australia, and Canada, though one of the ladies from Orange County California was pretty certain her commute that morning took longer than a flight from Sydney. We also had painters from Michigan, Alabama, Arizona, New York, Idaho, and across California swinging brushes and making bright color happen. My next California workshop is going to be in....*sound of harps* Sonoma, California! That spring class in one of the most beautiful wine destinations in the US is filling fast so don't delay, I'm reserving a grape with your name on it mon cher! Read more...

My new hydrangea DVD

Daisy Hearts and Delphs is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio, another large canvas after weeks of small paintings. I felt the need to stretch those brushes! I couldn't decide whether to subdue the pinks on this one, or keep them full blast. Thanks to my Facebook friends who made some great suggestions and - the vote to keep the pinks strong was unanimous! I carried the orange around by moving it into the belly buttons of the daisies, and then scattered pink petals on the tabletop corners, too. I like to think of this part as getting my chicken out, strapping his boots on, and letting him walk that color around the canvas. That's my farm girl roots showing a bit...
