'Delicate Orchid'- 8"x10" Botanical Still Life Original Oil Painting of a White Flower in a Turquoise Pitcher by New York Fine Artist Maryann Lucas
When I was arranging this still life in my shadow box, I noticed how cautiously I set the pitcher and placed the orchid in the water. The reason for my steady movement was the absolute delicacy of both the fine glass and the dangling blossom. When I started painting, the awareness of their fragility stayed with me. I found that more than capturing shape and color, I was concerned with capturing that quiet essence.

A Little Reb by Dottie Martz
Oil on 20x16 canvas. This is my grandson, Chris at about 5 years old. This was at an re-enactment of one of the Civil War Battles....somewhere here in Virginia. I don't remember which one. His mother made all of his clothes for the event as they had to be correct for the era.

Wild Red Cannas by Dottie Martz
Oil on 12x9 panel. Web site: dottiemartz.com
These cannas would not grow next to my garage...so I literally threw them into the swamp in my back yard. Now they are thriving! I can see them from my kitchen and I look forward to seeing them every summer.
Long Stem Red by Cathyann Burgess
Long Stem Red©2012C.L.Burgess 4 x 12 oil on wood panel
Long lasting, a red hot rose. On the sill in my studio, as it snows, I catch a hint of light. All too brief, the affair tonight, with the palette knife and red paint. But I think I captured it.
Somewhere along the path, I have found the challenge to get down and put what is fresh, with deliberation...of late, I find that the knife wields more power than the brush.
It helps, this simple tool, to keep things simple.

ORIGINAL CONTEMPORARY REALISM TROPICAL FLORAL WATERCOLOR PAINTING BY COLLEEN SANCHEZ - HEADING HOME
HEADING HOME ORIGINAL CONTEMPORARY PAINTING BY COLLEEN SANCHEZ WATERCOLOR ON PAPER 22 X 15 VISIT MY ART BLOG I've been imagining doing this painting for a couple of years. One day while visiting one of Hawaii Island's amazing coastal Botanical Gardens, I came across this grove of Heliconia. The only way to get near them presented a wonderful backlit scene. I finally worked through this group of photos over the holidays and finally decided to attempt painting them in watercolor. The challenge to save my whites and lights was huge because I do not ever use any masking and trying to get the edges of the stalks somewhat neat was really something else. I don't have anything against masking, it just doesn't seem to work for me so I don't have it anymore. In order that I didn't suffer too many frustrations, I worked on Arches 300 lb paper and did the painting in many short sessions over several weeks. Sometimes I would put it away for a few days so I could re-look at it with fresh eyes and try to determine if my original plan was on track. There was so much stuff going on in the background in the original Heliconia Grove I thought is best to leave it out and handle the background in an abstract fashion. I wanted the focus to be on the heliconia themselves and my little friend. If you ever visit the big island of Hawaii and love gardens make a visit to this one part of your itinerary, you won't be disappointed.. |

Mandevilla Spray by Dottie Martz
Oil on 14x11 linen panel. Website: dottiemartz.com
This came from my garden. I spotted it one morning as I was watering the tub planters on the deck. It was a bright sunny day and this was highlighted against the dark background of my trees below the deck. Perfect set-up.

"Ladies...The Final Rose" By Kelli Miller
Ok, I admit it...I watch the Bachelor. And this season I've coerced my husband into watching it with me! Sorry about the dark shadow on the top of the painting, it's the shadow from the frame.

SUNFLOWERS,BRASS AD GRAPES by Dottie Martz
Oil on linen panel 11x14. This is my third version (and I hope final). I was bothered by
my first one and softened it and made a few changes..in fact, a lot of changes. Mainly by adding more colors or hints of a color. With the yellows I always have to put in the lilac shades.
Sometimes I look at a painting days or weeks later and still make a change. If it is the correct one...you can quit!

Two Green Apples by Dottie Martz
Original oil on 6x6 linen panel. Website: dottiemartz.com
I am trying to paint a small mini painting every time I paint a larger one. That way, the mini-inventory will grow without effort. I love painting the small ones because you can paint them so fast.
However, I am still concentrating on the 9x12, 11x14 and 12x16. They are my favorites sizes.
To see what all I have painted please check out my website: dottiemartz.com
I am on the "Fresh Paint Daily Painters daily posting page (as of tomorrow), I have 4 blogs and
I can be reach either through my website or dottiemartz@cox.net.

"Sunflowers", an 8x10 original acrylic still life by western Colorado artist Barbara Churchley
