Palette Knife Still Life, Bottle Still Life, "Pretty In Pink Cross Bottle" by Carol Schiff, 6x8" Oil, Daily Painting

Are you a fan of cross bottles?  I recently discovered them and have become obsessed with them.   Cross bottles are vintage (usually) bottles that have been reclaimed.  A talented artist then designs a crystal cross or  other design as a top piece.  Many of the crystals come from discarded chandeliers.  I have also seen them with beautiful arrangements of sea shells, coral and sea fans.

As with all good art, they can become quite pricey, so after purchasing several, I decided to try to feed by obsession by painting instead of buying, much to my husband's relief.

I don't know how long that will work for me, but at the moment, it does seem to help.

If you are not familiar with cross bottles, seach for them on Etsy or Ebay where you will find a nice selection.  Beware!!  It may be dangerous to the viewer!

Red White and Blue Daisies and Geraniums
by Nancy Medina
20X20
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Red White and Blue Daisies and Geraniums is the newest container garden in Flower Mound Studio, in honor of Memorial Day. My father was a veteran of the Korean War, and though he never talked much about his time in the war, he brought home a handful of medals. He served on one of the first ships engaged in battle, since his destroyer was on a goodwill mission around the world when war was first declared. Read more....

Romantic Dreamers Roses - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

http://nancymedina.fineartstudioonline.com/workszoom/1471816

Romantic Dreamer Roses
by Nancy Medina
16X12
Oil on Archival Panel

Romantic Dreamer Roses is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio. I used transparent color to lay in the brightest pinks, and then color notes in opaques around the edges to push the jewel tones forward. I love creating clear glass vases on dark backgrounds, and pulling those dark color paths through the glass behind the vase. The last thing I paint is the clear glass vase, so I create the green stems beneath the roses as if the vase does not exist, then finish the vase in the last few steps of the painting.

Moon Garden White Peonies - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

Moon Garden White Peonies
by Nancy Medina
12X16
Oil on Archival Panel

Moon Garden White Peonies is the newest daily in Flower Mound Studio, and my peonies from class last weekend are almost finished blooming. These white flowers reminded me so much of a flower garden in Coronado, California, of all white roses and white lilies, white pansies and white irises. The garden was created to glow in moonlight. I've never seen a moon garden by moonlight, but I've heard they are beautiful. Someday, maybe I will!

Life Is But a Dream Sunflowers

Life Is But a Dream Sunflowers was my class demonstration today in North Texas, the last day of my 3-day flower painting workshop. We had the doors wide open to let in the breeze, and the weather was absolutely perfect today. It's a good thing, since the Byron Nelson was going on just up the street! Visit my art blog to see photos from my student gallery, - having a full time job as an artist and a teacher really is a dream come true. Next stop, Murfreesboro, Tennessee!

The Sisterhood Peonies and North Texas Workshop Adventures - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

 The Sisterhood Peonies and Limes
by Nancy Medina
20X16
Oil on Archival Panel

The Sisterhood Peonies was my class demonstration this morning in North Texas. Finding fresh peonies for class was like winning the lotto! Okay, well, like winning a $500 scratchoff ticket for sure...they are so rare here. We have a fun group, with gals from Oklahoma and Texas, and a gentleman from North Texas joining us, too. There's never a dull moment, we had spilled drinks, locked bathrooms, and one student who discovered she brought makeup brushes to class instead of paint brushes. Oh my! Tomorrow we have blue violet hydrangeas and white tulips to choose from. Decisions, decisions! Stay tuned to my art blog to find out what we paint next....

Windswept White Peony
by Nancy Medina
Oil on Archival Panel

I found pink and white peonies, white tulips, big bunches of violet blue hydrangeas, wild English Garden delphiniums and orange gerbera daisies today for my class in Irving, Texas beginning tomorrow morning. I can hardly wait to paint with 15 ladies and one gentleman from Louisiana, Oklahoma, and across Texas! I'm usually plotting and planning months in advance for upcoming workshops, and my new November 14-16 San Diego workshop page got its final polish today. I am trying out a whole new fancy format gadget thingy ma bob. I'm so very proud of myself for figuring out how to use it - take a peek and let me know what you think!

Grand Opening Pink Peonies - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

Grand Opening Pink Peonies
by Nancy Medina
14X14
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Grand Opening Pink Peonies is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio. I was so excited in my quest for coffee at the grocery store today, to discover pink and white peonies! The gal behind the flower counter said they had just come in. I bought three bundles, and they were closed like tight little eggs. In 2 hours, they were already stretching their wings, by tomorrow they will be at their peak so stay tuned. I suspect we shall see a few more peony paintings before they shatter like glass, as the fragile, wonderful flowers tend to do after a few days... It's like they woke up and said "Hey, how did we end up in steamy, hot Texas???" and fainted dead away or something, kind of how I felt that time I visited New Orleans in July.

Midnight Blue Hydrangeas and a French Dream Workshop - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

http://nancymedina.fineartstudioonline.com/workszoom/1464020

Midnight Blue Hydrangeas
by Nancy Medina
16X12
Oil on Archival Panel

Midnight Blue Hydrangeas is a new small work completed a few moments after midnight. Today was spent packing for my Nashville, Tennessee workshop. I've got to be a little strategic, since I need to leave enough supplies here for my Irving, Texas workshop, coming up in 1 week. It never fails I always discover one color I am almost out of right before ship day! It's like Murphy's law or something...I can blame it on the flurry of activity since I launched my France workshop on Thursday. The class is almost completely full, with only 2 seats left. It's the good kind of busy to be!

Read more about my France workshop here!

White Iris Tango and a Free Iris Video - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

http://nancymedina.fineartstudioonline.com/workszoom/1460935

White Iris Tango
by Nancy Medina
12X12
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

White Iris Tango is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio, based on the flowers of Argyle Acres Iris Garden in Argyle, Texas. I launched a new iris video for you today, and you can take a peek here. (pssst, it's free!) I've been watching my own iris beds with an eagle eye this month, celebrating each new blossom. My purples and blues have had no problem making an appearance, but only one white iris has peeked out so far. I'm holding my breath, awaiting the black iris I so carefully staked off, and asked my hubby to be sure not to thin or move in the annual culling. When it blooms, I'll share a photo with you. Notice I said when, rather than if? I'm thinking positive!
