Oh Happy Day

There’s nothing like moving paint around canvas and seeing what turns out. Starting out with a yellow background, keeping it light, then lay in some darks for some shadow. Before you know it....a little jar of flowers appear.

'A Cool Pear' - 6"x6" Still Life Original Oil Painting of Pear on a Plate by New York Fine Artist Maryann Lucas

I recently had a little exchange with plein aire artist Roos Schuring regarding her thoughts on still life painting. At this point in her career, she is fully invested and enthralled with the concept of painting out of doors, but at one time painted from photographs and studio set ups. I am breaking away from full reliance on photographs and I am just beginning to adventure outside. I asked her what aspects of still life study she thought would benefit my growth as a painter. She suggested I set up a still life in natural north light. So I did. She was so right! I have fallen in love with cool light... it is so elegant and quiet. Now that is a cool pear!

Kitchenware Whites by Cathyann Burgess

Kitchenware Whites©2012 C.L.Burgess 8x6 oil on panel  $175.

Back in January I painted with a former student of mine an posted a version of this.
Leaving it hanging about in my studio gave me time to mull over it's strengths and weakensses as an image. Since I have been recently thickening my paints and using the palette knife and the brush, I decided to lighten things up and freshen the application of the first go round. I also liked playing with the myriad kinds of whites that can make for an interesting painting.
It pays off once in a while to have "new eyes". It is good practice to turn things to the wall and let them sit, so that you can improve on an idea.

'A Pear After Dark' - 6"x6" Original Still Life Oil Painting of a Pear on a Plate by New York fine artist Maryann Lucas

Click Here to See All Available Work

My husband never travels for work, but he was out of town this past week. That meant only one thing to me.... I could paint at night!! I have always loved the feeling that the track lighting gives to my kitchen at night. So, one night, with the house to myself, I set up in the kitchen and painted a pear. As part of my commitment to expanding my painting style, I was going for big strokes, pretty color, speed and I wanted it all alla prima! Loose and painterly are what I am longing for nowadays... and I quite like this effort.

I thoroughly enjoyed creating this little watercolor painting. The main rose opening with such delicate shades of pink I worked wet into wet with shadows added after she dried. I really had a lot of fun with the supporting buds too, always a challenge to make sure not to overpower the main event. The background I did with rich paint, lifting and dropping in colors. Hope you like her.

Just Beet by Cathyann Burgess

Just Beet©2012C.L.Burgess 6x8 oil on canvas panel  $175. unframed

What happens when a foodie is also an artist? Well something like the above. Before washing, peeling, cutting then roasting these beautiful veggies, I had to paint them. Such rich tones. And mmm, what flavor! But, boy am I just "beet" from all the work!

Fine China

Today, I started painting a still life of a flawless fine china sugar and creamer set that was sitting along side a peeled tangerine. I sketched in the shapes with thin magenta paint but I was feeling a bit stiff and tense.

The sound of waves from the beach were beckoning me and my doggie was watching me from outside the glass doors. Begging. I said, “Well, heck! Let’s go to the beach!” So,
I grabbed a leash, her ball chucker and ball, and headed out for a walk.

As I was walking and throwing the ball into the water, I noticed the tide was out and there were thousands of broken shells on the sand. I began stuffing them into the pocket of my jeans..sand and all. Far be it from me to take along a plastic bag....oh no, not me...that would mean I was planning, thinking ahead....something I’m not exactly known for. (I flunked out of Girl Scouts. Go figure!)

I've always been more intrigued by broken shells than by perfect ones, or fine china for that matter. Perfection is something I’ve never quite been able to achieve. Broken shells remind me of authenticity...a sense of struggle, overcoming and survival. Broken shells must have stories to tell. I call them the sea’s relics and who knows, maybe they are as old as Mount Vesuvius. These shells have been weathered, smoothed down and reshaped by being tossed over and over against the ocean bottom. Weathering the storms of life are never very easy. Storms have a way of peeling away the superficial, cutting to the core and leaving you polished and authentic.

Anyway, once I got back to the house, I emptied my brimming pockets with little bits and pieces for a project later on, then went inside to finish today’s painting of that perfect fine china. The way it ended up didn’t exactly project the feeling of perfection but of warmth. But, I’ll let you decide on that. But here’s the finished project. Hope you enjoy.

Color Me Roses

Today is perfect for a jar of roses. Lest you think that every post will be a $600 ostrich, let me put you at ease.

I am embarking on a series of “Happy Squares”. Each gallery wrapped square is ready for hanging and can be yours for $99, shipping included.

These squares are designed to give you a brief happy moment, perhaps a smile as you walk by.
Sometimes it will be a floral. Sometimes it may be a starfish or a crab across the sand. Such are the delights that God has blessed us with. So often we overlook what He has done.

I love painting these little florals. My eyebrows raise in delight as I move the colors around on the canvas. I find myself smiling as I add a bright magenta onto a wall or cup, then highlight those blossoms with white.

Hope you have a delightful day.
Sue

Flowers and Coffee. What could be better than that? Another 12x12 Happy Square. Gallery wrapped, ready to hang. $99. Free shipping.

Just got back from the seashore. Palette knife painting again. Fun. I missed my paints. But the seaside is good for the soul as well.
