Salvaged: Some thoughts on a Still Life by Cathyann Burgess

Salvaged©2011C.L.Burgess oil on linen 16x12
Bella Arte Gallery

When I thought of the title it was so very appropriate. To salvage is to rescue.

We artists, and  most especially former art teachers make good use of things disposed, forgotten, unwanted, worn out, the flotsam and jetsam of life. I used to so admire the artist Louise Nevelson for that. She, taking the tossed out and about; breathing new life into the found object.

Maybe too, the symbolism herein could also be read differently, as we all bring something to the pieces as we look at art objects. What could the spent spider flower mean in this context? And the the weathered wood; was it used to support perhaps a porch roof? Or did the painter put those words there? Why are these objects precious enough to  arrange and paint?

What story do these things hold for you?
Art tells stories. It really doesn't matter what that story is sometimes, once the artist gives it birth. The experience has already been had once. It is generously given now for others to ruminate over, write poems for, remember someone or something or somewhere; giving still, new birth to yet more art, perhaps.
Thank you, Louise.

This is a value study I did in Carol Marine's workshop. I learned more from her in 5 days than I did in three years of classes! Love her!

Wildflowers, an original 14x11 pastel by western Colorado artist, Barbara Churchley

Gloria J Zucaro's "The Fairy Godmother"

11.75"H x 9"W Original Oil on Black Canson Paper                 Unframed
This painting is for sale in the Daily Paintworks auction site for the Challenge,
"Every Mother Counts".  The Challenge is the theme "Mom".
All proceeds from the sale will go to Heather Armstrong's(aka Dooce) Team.
I am starting the bid at $50.00 plus actual shipping to your location.

I was ready to paint this little fairy one morning and realized that I didn't have a canvas available in the size I wanted, so just decided to paint her on a piece of my black Canson pastel paper.  I think the dark background really sparks up her vibrant colors.

24" x 12" oil on panel  to see more of my work go to dianamarshallfineart.com

This one took a week of hard work and a lot of layers of paint until it was perfect, and those lines on the plate made me see checks before my eyes when I went to sleep!  I'm finally happy with it after a lot of fine tuning.

             My Blog                                    My Website

I went to Costco to get some things for a luncheon at my house with girlfriends.  One friend drinks tea, so I bought a bag of lemons.  What was I thinking!  I got 5lbs of lemons and as it turned out she didn't even have tea that day!  So I am thinking I am going to have to make homemade lemonade...humm, I think I need a 5lb bag of sugar!

Gloria J Zucaro's "Diamonds are..."

11"H x 14"W Original oil on Canvas
$75.00 plus S&H
Another really fun challenge from the Daily Paintworks site.  Carol Marine listed a photo of a young girl with a very busy background.  She said to do what we would with the photo in making our own background.  I don't know why, but I immediately thought of the young girl leaving Tiffany's with her bag filled with and her body covered in diamonds.  My Blog

6x6 oil
Last week I went to a garage sale and got a rather homely looking stuffed chicken. Here he is!

Gloria J Zucaro's "Entri qui, per favore"

10"H x 8"W Original Oil from part of cropped photo by Layne Cook
for the Daily Paintworks Challenge for the week of October 9-15.  $100.00

     My Blog
In this challenge we were to pick part of the photo from Layne Cook and make our own composition.
Here is whole photo.
When I enlarged it to see it better, I saw this beautiful carved wooden and massive doorway at the top of the stairs. It is draped with a canopy and side panels in lush fabric.  I was attracted the the doorway and curved stonework over the door as well as the light on the side of the building leading up to the entry.  To me it is in an Italian city.  So I am calling it "Enter Here, Please" in Italian.  The translation is from the Yahoo Babel Fish site.

Red Striped Camellia by Cathyann Burgess

Red Striped Camellia©2011 C.L.Burgess16 x 12 oil on linen

The camellias in my yard are getting ready to bloom again. These were
painted from my spring blossoms and hopefully gaining attention and
a new home from the show Art at the Mill which ends this weekend.

I am especially looking forward to seeing the blooms this season,
in stark contrast to the tree that was felled form Irene, not two
feet away from it. Photos will follow. And of course, more paintings
of camellias.

Here is another one of my Summer lunches.  I always have some string cheese available for my 3 year old grandson Enzo when he comes over.  So if I am in a hurry, it is great to grab some cherry tomatoes, the cheese and a little shake of salt on the tomatoes for a quick snack.  I love my salt and pepper set that were handcrafted with wire and blue & red  glass drops.

This piece is from earlier this summer.  Just now realized that I'd never posted it.  My plein air group, Garden Artists, painted in the most beautiful garden that day.  I love the way the light and shadows created a pattern on the fence.

Still Life: A Sunny Disposition by Cathyann Burgess

A Sunny Disposition©2011 C.L.Burgess oil 6x6 oil on board

After returning from seeing my best girlfriend, who lives in State College, PA I feel a rush of warmth. So what better way to express days well spent in the sunshine of friendship, in spite of the gray weather of the mountains that surrounded us during my stay.

On the way to lunch, we saw a field of sunflowers, boldly presenting their sunny faces against the steel blue, cold sky.  A Cheers to us! from nature.
We made our own sunshine. This is my impression.

Their little chunky nest reminds me of a log and it's splinters.

" At the Casita" 18x14, an original oil still life painting by western Colorado artist Barbara Churchley
