Petite Painting Project by Pamela Blaies

6" x 6"
oil on linen

Easter weekend was a special time with my family and I was thankful to be reminded again of my blessings.  Now that April is here, I'm excited to announce a new project I've been planning for a while called the Petite Painting Project. Over the next several months, I will be painting 100 pint-sized paintings that I will post to my blog and share on dailypaintworks.com.    I know it is April Fool's day today, but this is no joke!

I love to share my art and inspiration. Click HERE to sign up for my email newsletter and receive a free gift of postcards.

I still have a bowl full of garlic in my studio from painting this painting. I noticed yesterday that I was feeling hungry all day - I think the garlic aroma was making my mouth water! Time to clean the studio...

Plein Air Painting in the Spring by Pamela Blaies

6.5" x 5.5"
oil

I enjoy painting in my comfortable studio - music on, no worries of outside elements interfering with my painting process. I've only done plein air (painting outside) a handful of times and that was years ago. I have many friends who prefer painting outdoors and I'm planning to go on a trip with some of them in May, so I recently purchased a travel easel. Yesterday I drove by a yard filled with gorgeous white irises , so I ran home to grab my new plein air stuff to try it out. It was a little awkward getting everything all set up and I was only able to paint for about 30 minutes, but it was fun! Here's the little study I finished. I don't know if I'll ever be a die hard, paint in the freezing snow kind of artist, but it sure is nice painting outside in the spring!

"Catching The Light" Original Still Life Floral Oil Painting by Georgia Artist Deanna Jaugstetter

As I painted this floral oil painting in my studio, the light coming from the window stayed consistent until the end. Often, a light source will change dramatically, challenging the artist in that he must remember the initial inspiration for the painting. For me, so often it is the way light falls across the subject matter! Such is the joy and challenge of painting from life. Hydrangea is a southern flowering bush that brings me great joy in my garden from mid spring through late June!

First Signs of Spring by Pamela Blaies

16" x 20"
oil on linen

My neighbors planted some Carolina Jessamine (aka Carolina Jasmine) on the other side of our fence. Every spring I look forward to the vines climbing over and spilling loads of cheery, yellow blossoms onto my side of the fence. I can see them from my kitchen window and they are one of the first signs of spring in my yard. The flowers are so prolific, I can snip off 5 or 6 pieces of vine a day for several weeks without making a dent. I arranged a bouquet of them yesterday and they are stunning in this hand-blown blue glass vase.

Is Perfection the Enemy of Good? by Pamela Blaies

12" x 16"
oil on linen

I got up early yesterday and painted until late in the evening. I'm working on loosening up my style a bit. I tend to be a perfectionist and it is difficult for me to stop adding details and "perfecting" my paintings. For me, I find that some detail is necessary especially in the focal areas. But too much detail can take away from the experience. I did a couple of quick studies of these irises to get myself warmed up, then completed this painting. They are such a pretty color. I'm headed to the studio again today hoping they still look fresh so I can paint them again.

"My Turn" Original Oil Bird and Cage Painting by Georgia Artist Deanna Jaugstetter

Birds circle the air in the spring and summer waiting to sample the menu at the birdfeeder in this painting. I love to watch this activity as I work at my kitchen window! I manage to slowly raise the window being careful not to startle the birds by snapping photographs of them before they fly away! In this small oil painting on canvas board, the bird at the top of the painting is waiting patiently for his turn to feed!

Lemons, Lemons, Lemons by Pamela Blaies

12" x 24"
oil on linen

After so many studies of lemons last week, you'd think I might get tired of painting lemons. But, I did another study before painting this one on linen. I like doing studies because they help to clarify my ideas, give me a chance to play around with composition and determine the best color palette.

"Counterbalance" Original Still Life Floral Painting by Georgia Artist Deanna Jaugstetter

When I created the still life of calla lilies in my art studio, I was pleased with the arrangement of the lilies but knew I had to have some feature in the acrylic painting to counterbalance the natural orientation of flowers whose stem is unable to hold them upright! The yellow satin ribbon adds to the playfulness of the arrangement!
