This is another in a series of interpretive floral paintings. The dahlias intense colors are offset by jagged lines and the spotty background suggests a wall behind the table. I like to work with transparent vases and how they distort stems.

I don't know about you, but I was beginning to think that winter would never go away! I now what you're thinking...."she lives in Florida???) Well. true, but even in Florida we have seen day after day of piles of snow and cars sliding off the road, although it was on the nightly news. We feel for those of you who had to suffer through it first hand and we are happy that it is gone.
So lets all celebrate a new beginning.

English Daisies are often seen in the southern garden. As a cut flower they give pleasure to the home for several days. I always have said they when I become wealthy, I will have fresh flowers in my home at all times! While I have not accumulated monetary wealth, I have wealth in all areas of my life that are really satisfying. In this painting, my goal was to capture that magic moment when the sun just peeks through the horizon and night turns to day.
For me, that is the best moment.......knowing I have a brand new day to enjoy.
I did my favorite palette knife technique (which I have labeled color weaving) on this. I find it gives me a great way to blend from one color to another.
I hope your day is fabulous and if you have not seen a sunrise lately...set your alarm for tomorrow, grab a cup of coffee and enjoy the show!

Watercolor and gouache
Gouache is an opaque substance with the consistency of toothpaste. It is water-based and acts like a very high grade poster paint. In this painting I struggled mightily to get the feel of the geraniums, one of my favorite flowers, and failed. Out of desperation I blocked out most of the under image until only the glowing pot and geranium head were visible. It has a magnetically mysterious effect I never planned on.

This was the result of a request from a client. The client's friend found this crusty old bottle in the surf of the Virgin Islands. She wanted to surprise him with a gift and thought a little painting of a special day would be perfect.
I panted from a photo she supplied. The main challenge was to achieve the crusty appearance of the bottle.

Another great perk, besides helpers who are cute and furry and four-footed, is getting to travel and teach - my next European destination is coming up in June and you are invited! I like painting flowers because I love the vibrant colors and I can make the shapes whatever I want them to be. Most of my flower paintings are free of detail and stress. I almost feel like I am playing when I paint them. The next time you are close to tearing your hair out, I highly recommend, step back and take a deep breath.....and work on a flower painting!
