A Little Studio Time by Pamela Blaies

12" x 9"
oil

Today I enjoyed some time in the studio after all of the fun family Christmas festivities of the past week. After putting a dark tone on the canvas, I took a cloth and wiped out the areas that I was going to add light. Then I blocked in the shadows, letting the toned canvas show through some of the brushstrokes. Last of all I added the light mostly with palette knife. This is a study for a larger painting I'm planning for tomorrow and I'm really happy with the loose feel of it.

More Winter Berries - Daily Study #4 by Pamela Blaies

8" x 10"
oil

The days are crazy lately, but I am enjoying my little daily studies. I found these beautiful blue berries all over my indian hawthorn bushes, so I clipped some to bring inside to paint. Using transparent washes that leave some of the toned canvas showing through gives an interesting effect when used in conjunction with impasto texture in the oranges and berries.

Stocking Stuffers - Daily Study #3 by Pamela Blaies

10" x 8"
oil

For this little painting, I dug around my fridge to find models. I used a stiff brush for the shadows and the highlights on the table, which let some of the toned canvas show through, giving a textured, transparent look.  Then I used a knife for most of the lighted areas of the fruit.

Winter Holly - Daily Study # 2 by Pamela Blaies

8" x 10"
oil

I did this study yesterday using some holly with berries I found in my yard. I focused on being selective in my edges, making abstract shapes on my canvas, instead of painting "leaves." I enjoyed painting free strokes with a brush and adding some texture and sharp edges with the knife. The effect of the teacup in this composition makes the holly seem to dance around in a circle.

Christmas Countdown by Pamela Blaies

8" x 10
oil

Christmas is my favorite holiday, but things can get a little hectic. Since I will have such limited time in my studio this month, I've decided to play around a little to loosen my stress. I'm going to do small studies for the rest of the month. Just some fun ideas loosely and quickly painted. What best for the first study? A gift of poinsettias I received last week.

Blessings in Abundance by Pamela Blaies

oil on canvas
24" x 36"

The idea of this painting is thankfulness.  Full of blooms and berries I found in my yard, books and other cozy things, it makes me think of my many blessings.  A great thing to focus on during this busy time of year.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words by Pamela Blaies

12" x 16"
oil on canvas

Yesterday, I delivered some of my newest paintings to Steve Beasley, a professional art photographer in Dallas, to be photographed. There is no way to fully experience a piece of art unless you are viewing it right in front of you. But sometimes viewing artwork on a screen is the only option. Lighting, color preciseness and glare was always the biggest struggle when capturing my artwork on camera. Compare my best photo just below (which took forever to adjust on Photoshop) with the professional photo - need I say more.

Dreaming of Autumn by Pamela Blaies

24" x 36"
oil on canvas

I had a dream last week of autumn leaves falling which inspired this painting. I gathered a few of my late hydrangea blooms, some sprigs of shrubs and fallen leaves I found in my garden to put this composition together. The bright red pomegranate was the perfect punch of color for all of the subdued earth colors. Looking at this piece gives me the fresh, warm feeling I always get when the cool weather of Autumn comes around.

Technique Demonstration by Pamela Blaies

20" x 16"
oil on canvas

After a workshop this fall and some experimenting over the past few weeks, my technique has begun to evolve a little. I used to do a pencil sketch before painting to make sure I was pleased with my composition.  Now, instead I abstractly "block in" my composition with a large brush. I was able to adjust and make the silver pitcher smaller after the block in showed me how to make the composition stronger.

I'm looking forward to the Artists of Texas Annual Show at the Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas. It opens this weekend with a "meet the artist" reception this Saturday, November 3, from 11 am - 4 pm. The Umber Effect by Pamela Blaies

20" x 16"
oil on canvas

The subtle greens of this painting came from experimenting with two new colors on my palette. I didn't actually use any tubes of green, just mixes from my usual ultramarine blue, different cad yellows and yellow ochre. But I also added raw and burnt umber to the mix this time. I really like the effect the umbers have on my palette.

Red Pansies by Pamela Blaies

12" x 24"
oil on canvas

The workshop this week with Sherrie McGraw has been really great. I'm learning so many new ideas. I've been utilizing her technique of blocking in the composition with abstract shapes to see the idea on canvas before painting. This really makes much more sense to me than sketching it out with pencil. Here is the painting I worked on yesterday and finished up today.

Workshop Week by Pamela Blaies

9" x 12"
oil on linen

This week, I am taking a still life workshop from a wonderful artist named Sherry McGraw.  We're working on composition and color.  I don't think one can ever learn enough about composition and color.  Here is the study I finished on Monday.  The underpainting and toning were done in Burnt Umber.  I've never used it much in my paintings before, but it has now been added to my permanent palette.  I love it!
