Still Life Floral Sketch "Peonies" by Georgia Artist Deanna Jaugstetter

"Peonies" is a pencil and watercolor still life that is inspired by one of my favorite flowers! I don't have the flower growing in my garden but was the recipient of a bouquet of peonies out of my friend, Becky's garden! One must work fast because these little beauties are not long lasting after cut! I prefer the delicate pink blooms!

 Warm Heart Stargazer Lilies
by Nancy Medina
14X14
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

Warm Hearts Stargazers is the daily newbie in Flower Mound Studio, where things are in a bit of a floral uproar, petals flying hither and yon, leaves scattered everywhere. The studio director in particular has been quite helpful as I pack for the dream vacation of a lifetime, a trip to Southern France. This is my first trip to France, and the hubby is going with so I'll have a big strong guy to carry all my baubles and trinkets and help scout out the best gelato in town. We were told to "pack light" so I've pretty much narrowed down to the following essentials: Read more...

Flower Painting | Small Oil Painting | Daily Painting | White Bird by Carol Schiff | 8x10x1.5" Original Oil

With this flower painting, I wanted to celebrate the beautiful, but not so well recognized, White Bird of Paradise.  If you live in the sub-tropical areas of the world, you probably see orange Bird of Paradise every day, but the white variety is not as plentiful.

purchase here
150 + shipping
The intresting thing is that although the flowers are similar excluding color, the plant and leaves are quite different.

This variety grows on a much taller plant.  I have one over 12 feet tall.  The orange plant is lower to the ground and more bush like.

No frame necessary!

Magic Dreamer Tulips
by Nancy Medina
14X11
Oil on Archival Panel

My new DVD

The fresh tulips were a bit droopy this morning, so I pulled out my magic straws and propped them up for at least one more painting under the spotlight in Flower Mound Studio today. I painted these with a limited palette 2 days ago, so today I decided to get all of the crayons out of the box and infuse them with a little August heat. Never shy away from the unexpected. After all, you're the boss of your flowers!

Original Contemporary Abstract Mixed Media Flower Art Painting "Rhythm and Blues" by Contemporary Arizona Artist Pat Stacy

Another happy painting with the gold foil pen on texture making a bright frame. The background is a neutral beige, with the bright orange and yellow textured pot holding the bright flowers. The Entity, spiral, and triskelion are there in gold and shadow, completing the piece. It is done on a wood panel, giving it a distinctive look.

Five Sisters White Tulips and a Dangerous Encounter in the Market - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

 Five Sisters White Tulips
by Nancy Medina
14X14

My new DVD

Five Sisters White Tulips was a celebratory painting in Flower Mound Studio today, celebratory because I found one lone bundle of French tulips in the market - in August no less! These flowers have a mysterious past. I know they weren't from Texas. I'd be amazed if they were from California this late in the season. When asked about their roots, they were absolutely mum. While in the market, the lady pushing them around in the shopping cart was distracted by a very dangerous substance, one which is perfectly legally bought and sold every day not a mile from her house -visit my art blog today to see a photo of the incriminating evidence....

My new DVD

Heart's Wish Sunflowers is the newest painting in Flower Mound Studio. Someone asked the other day why I always have flowers on the tabletop. I love the natural feel of a flower garden, especially after some time has passed and the flowers and petals have fallen and scattered. I think this is nature's way of decorating her own landscape.

Morning Gifts Sunflowers and a North Texas Workshop - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

Morning Gifts Sunflowers
by Nancy Medina

Class Demonstration
16X12
Oil on Archival Panel

My new DVD

Morning Gifts Sunflowers was one of my class demonstrations in North Texas last weekend. We painted daisies, peonies, glads, stock, sunflowers and roses, with an emphasis on bold, bright color. It's really an honor to have students give up their free time to study with me, I never dreamed 10 years ago I would have a whole new career I absolutely loved - as a teacher. Visit my art blog for pictures of my students hard at work making flowers bloom!

This week I'll be spending some time with mom, packing up supplies to ship to my Memphis, Tennessee class, and organizing outlet adapters and leakproof containers of shampoos and lotions to PACK LIGHT for my trip to France! One friend said she always takes her own coffee with her when she travels overseas. Considering my new-found addiction to iced coffee, I'm sure contemplating how I could manage that....

How to Paint From Life and Provence Violet Sunflowers - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

Provence Violets Sunflowers was one of seven class demonstrations this weekend in my North Texas workshop. Why paint from life? Why not save a few pennies and just print out a bunch of prints at the PhotoMart down the street and use those? Here's why. You cannot hide your true self and your true style when you paint from life. Read more....

Flower Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Floral Still Life, Hydrangea Painting, HYDRANGEA AND MUG, 8X8", PALETTE KNIFE PAINTING, SOLD

SOLD

I picked these hydrangea from my garden last month and was compelled to paint them.  Hydrangea are probably my very favorite flowers and I love the summer months when my home is surrounded with their massive blooms.

I wanted to keep the painting as simple as the pitcher and mug.

For me, keeping it simple usually means "palette knife".

My new DVD

Cherry Jubilee Daisies was my class demonstration this morning in my North Texas workshop. Every student in class stretched their wings and created daisies in their own style, such is the fruit of painting from life rather than photographs or patterns. The most direct path to your own style will come when you transition away from painting from photographs, and graduate to painting from life. But there is another element to consider before we are ready to really cut loose with color - read more...

We made red roses bloom in oils in North Texas today, with students from Arkansas, California, New Mexico, and across Texas. Working with big brushes and abstracting shapes, and pushing bright color to the extreme was the lesson plan, and judging from the smiles, it was a productive morning! Tomorrow we will paint a familiar subject - daisies - with a new twist - a HOT PINK backdrop. Stay tuned for more photos, flower friends. If you get to class early, I might even save you a...brownie! Baby It's Grand by Pamela Blaies

Baby It's Grand
6" x 6"
oil on linen

I'm so excited to be the new owner of a grand piano built in 1949 - just delivered last week! The north light coming in from these windows is gorgeous, so I set up in the living room today to do a quick study. I love the drama of the bright light juxtaposed with the shadows of the ebony black piano. I have a feeling this piano will be a part of many more paintings in the future.

Children of the Sun Sunflowers and Growing Up on a Farm - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

Children of the Sun Sunflowers
by Nancy Medina
14X14
Oil on Gallery Wrap Canvas

My new DVD

Children of the Sun Sunflowers was one of my class demonstrations and is a painting of one of my absolute favorite flowers. I grew up on an organic farm in East Texas where the 10-foot tall sunflowers attracted insects off the crops, fed the birds, and provided rows and rows of beautiful color. I remember being embarrassed when friends who lived "in town" would come to visit, since they would see our country life, how we lived in a very basic house, wearing hand-me-downs and rarely doing the things city kids took for granted, such as going to the pool or shopping at the mall. For us, "going to town" was an event, and if we stopped at the Dairy Queen for ice cream cones when Dad finished his errands, this was a huge treat. Read more...

Eucalyptus and Daisies - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

http://nancymedina.fineartstudioonline.com/workszoom/1533297

 Eucalyptus and Daisies
by Nancy Medina
20X16
Oil on Archival Panel

My new DVD

Eucalyptus and Daisies was one of my class demonstrations in San Diego last week, starring my favorite little sugar bowl and a borrowed vase from a friend. I love the sugar bowl so much (purchased from Hobby Lobby with my half price coupon!) I actually bought two of these little guys, in case one ever gets broken en route to a workshop. In my demo painting, I wanted to give the white pitcher minimal frills, so it would not attract too much attention from the daisies, and I chose the eucalyptus greenery deliberately because I knew the cool teal greens would set off the hot pink flowers. I always try to find ways to be a little strategic in setting up my arrangements, and lots of these tips are shared on my new art DVDs. I have one seat left in my November San Diego class, and this will be my last marketing class so I sure hope to see you there! Read more...

August Rose - Flower Paintings by Nancy Medina

http://nancymedina.fineartstudioonline.com/workszoom/1532431

 August Rose
by Nancy Medina
16X12
Oil on Archival Panel

We had to make an urgent trip to Central Market *sound of harps* in Southlake, Texas, today, as it was Hatch Chili Weekend there, per my husband. They had giant bins of fresh Hatch Chilis all over the store, as well as Hatch Chili Cheese Popcorn, Hatch Chili cheeses, Hatch Chili hamburgers, Hatch Chili salsa, ad infinitum. I delayed my trip to the flower section as we sampled every single Hatch Chili Free Sampler Take a Bite of This stand throughout the entire store.

But at some point, I had to tear myself away to see what fresh flowers were in stock. The fresh white roses were clearly on steroids, so I grabbed a bundle of those for a commission I am working on. Then, well, the sunflowers were a particularly lovely shade of yellow, so golden. And you always need cornflower blue delphiniums if you've got fresh golden sunflowers. I am fairly certain that is a botanical law. So I set up two giant fresh flower arrangements, one with roses, one with sunflowers, turned on all my hot spotlights in the studio, and began painting as soon as we got home. August Rose was my brush warm-up. Stay tuned for more flowers to come! I have to paint as fast as I can, before we all melt....

You are invited to join me in San Diego in November for more flowers, more painting, and more fresh pastries every morning. The workshop has just a few seats left so don't delay - let's making brilliant flowers bloom together in the sunshine state!

The Color of Light by Pamela Blaies

Orchard Apples
10" x 8"
oil on linen

I chose the different kinds of apples for their varied colors, because although this painting is about light, I wanted it to feel colorful. Creating light on canvas with oil paint often involves sacrificing color because adding white makes color less saturated.  However, using color temperature along with value can achieve not only more colorful paintings, but also pretty dramatic light effects. It might be a little difficult to see in the photo, but the brightest highlights that seem white are actually clearly identifiable colors when you look closely. The dark red apple's highlight is cobalt blue, the bright red's is viridian and the bottom apple has a cool pink highlight. Since the temperature of the color in the highlight is cooler and has a dramatic value contrast to the local color of each apple, they read as bright light reflections that are more interesting than simply white.

My new hydrangea DVD

California Dreaming was the first of three demonstrations in my San Diego workshop this weekend with a very talented group of ladies from around the US. What a treat to make new friends every time I teach a class here in historic Balboa Park.

In addition to acquiring quite a few fresh flowers here in the land of sunshine, I couldn't resist splurging on some new vases. A girl's gotta have her bling! How I'll get these lovely ceramics home to Texas is a concern for another day, because today (and tomorrow) we make flowers bloom in brilliant color! Stay tuned for more pictures to come....!
