 Petite Garden Pink Peonies was one of my new peony paintings in Flower Mound Studio today. The clock is still ticking, and if I hold my breath and no one sneezes, the delicate fresh peonies may last another day or 2! I didn't brave the shopping crowds today, and the puggies were quite happy for me to stay home at their beck and call. The only time I ventured out was this morning with the hubby for a brisk 3 mile walk. It was windy and the trees were turning and the leaves were like sparkling bits of gold falling all around us. Pink Zone Peonies is the daily newbie in Flower Mound Studio, celebrating the Day 3 of the fresh peony extravaganza bonanza, as well as a day of feasting and thanks. I hope your holiday was beautiful, filled with loved ones, comfort, laughter, and, even some little four footed snugglers. Right now I have one little puggy girl snoozing with her chin on my foot, and another in my lap resting her chin on my wrist. The important thing is, the pugs are happy! I'm happy too - I love painting peonies, they are so frilly and unkempt. Even their leaves are quite a tangle, reminding me of the old adage, every crooked line can use a bend in it! Happy Thanksgiving to you flower friends, may your pumpkin pie have extravagant portions of home made whippy creme on it!

Peach Sorbet is the newest large work on the easel, as I paint these fresh peonies as quickly as I can - after all, how many more times this winter will I find peonies in the market? I was thrilled to get a note informing me that the new owner of my latest Romantic Kitty painting was very happy with their new acquisition. Not only that, their kitty, Spike, liked it, too! True story. The hubby and I were browsing the gourmet cheese aisle at the new Whole Foods near Flower Mound, Texas today. A woman walked by on her cell phone. She had peonies in her basket. I turned to my husband and said in a very, very calm voice: "Honey. They have peonies." He was browsing the olive bar and didn't really hear me. I said in a more serious tone. "HONEY. THEY HAVE PEONIES. I'VE GOT TO GO THE FLOWER SECTION. NOW."  I was very proud about what happened next. Read more....

Floral Still Life Series, #2, Daily Painting, 6x8"

I have been working on a series of small floral still life paintings in the past week or two.  The images are all from small floral arrangements that I cut from my garden and photographed over the five years.  I never painted them, but always kept the images in my files.

It's odd how you ignore something, something you may see many, many times, and then one day you look at it and magic happens.

When I noticed one of these little pictures last week, it was like the first time I had seen it.  The strong shapes drew me in immediately.

Since then, I have been in a floral frenzy.....painting one after another.  The common factor, other than that they are all flowers, is that each image had back lighting, sometimes strong, sometimes not so much.

So here is #2 in the series.  I will be posting them all, but not in painting order and probably not every day.

This week I am doing several portrait commissions.  After a few weeks of struggling with those projects, I will be ready to return to these simple and refreshing daily florals.

Golden Halo Sunflowers and Hydrangeas was one of my class demonstrations in San Diego, California, last week, and no sooner was I unpacked than it was time to put on the winter clothes and turn on the foot heaters here in North Texas. Studio Director AnnieBee has also decided it is winter, and spends hours in her new bed snoring near the easel. I've shared a photo on my bloggy today for you, since it's always good to have evidence when you discover your Number One Helper sleeping on the job!

 California Blooming Radishes and Hydrangeas was my class demonstration in historic Balboa Park this weekend. I was tickled pink to find the roses were in bloom on Coronado Island, when we visited my favorite cottage garden there after class. This talented group of painters included the largest collection of international students I've ever had in a class. The traveled furthest award went to six students from Singapore, Australia, and Canada, though one of the ladies from Orange County California was pretty certain her commute that morning took longer than a flight from Sydney. We also had painters from Michigan, Alabama, Arizona, New York, Idaho, and across California swinging brushes and making bright color happen. My next California workshop is going to be in....*sound of harps* Sonoma, California! That spring class in one of the most beautiful wine destinations in the US is filling fast so don't delay, I'm reserving a grape with your name on it mon cher! Read more...
